Lava Sport and Fitness Featuring The Boxing Club Review

Lava Sport and Fitness Featuring The Boxing Club in San Diego

**UPDATE 5/27/2011: Steve Wade is closing the Point Loma Lava Sport and Fitness gym. He failed to pay his rent on the location and is being evicted. What is worst is that he didn’t tell his staff until today and the gym is set to close in 2 days. I would not recommend signing a contract with this gym as it is going downhill.

**UPDATE: Watch out for the contract as if you don’t read it over very, very, very carefully.. you will be stuck in a year contract that you can’t cancel until like one month prior to the end of your contact. I.E. Confusing and kind of shady. Not very happy with the gym in that regard.

Recently, Kellyne and I bought a Lava Sport & Fitness Featuring The Boxing Club membership from thedailysave.com for $18. We thought it would be a great activity we could do together. The $18 included 1 month all inclusive membership with 1 free personal training session. We called in a couple weeks ago to schedule our personal training session and first time going to this boxing club in San Diego.

Lava Sport & Fitness Featuring The Boxing Club
( Kearny Mesa Location ) Review:Melchor "Mel" Menor of The Boxing Club and Muay Thai Champion

This is the first location we went to for our personal training session with Eric.  Upon arrival, Eric teased us for arriving two minutes late, then proceeded to put us on the Stairmaster for a quick warmup for about 5 minutes to warm us up so we wouldn’t get injured during the 1 hour workout. After our quick warmup,we proceeded to the “boxing ring” for our training session. I’ll spare you the details of the entire workout, but by the end of the workout, we both were dead tired. I always considered myself a pretty active individual (surfing, working out, rock climbing, etc), but this workout still kicked my butt.

Overall I would say this is a more intense location. One of the trainers is the a man named Melchor Menor, 2 time World Muay Thai Champion. This is also the location that started The Boxing Club company. I would also recommend anyone with asthma to bring their inhaler! :)

Lava Sport & Fitness ( UTC Location ) Review:

The next day we went to the UTC Lava Sport and Fitness Featuring The Boxing Club location because it was close and had a class we wanted to try out.  It was a somewhat small location with a weight room, small boxing area, and upstairs “class room”. The co-owner was quite friendly, trying to direct us where to go upon arrival, however it did feel a little less welcoming overall. It could be that we went in on a slow day when there weren’t a lot of people working. A good location if you want to just pop in and do a class. With all locations, be sure to arrive at least 10 minutes early if you need with you hand wraps. If you don’t know what a hand wrap is, make it 15 minutes ;) .

Lava Sport & Fitness ( Pt Loma Location ) Review:

Lava Sport and Fitness Featuring the boxing club san diego

I think this is our favorite location thus far. The largest Lava Sport and Fitness Location and I believe the newest. It comes complete with a couple “classrooms”, a nice sized weight and cardio room, and a gravity room. When you first arrive, you are greeted by the friendly front desk. They will gladly direct you where to go if you are unsure where a class is. Kellyne and I have been to this location twice so far, both times we did the Gravity class. It is also a nice location because it doesn’t get overly crowded.

The first time we did the”gravity” course, it was with Natalie. All the instructors seem to know who has been to one of their classes before, as it is probably a 21-24 people max that can attend at one time. Be sure to arrive 10-20 minutes early to be sure you get a spot as sometimes these classes fill up quickly. Natalie is a friendly instructor that had no problem taking the time to make sure we were doing the exercises correctly. I would take this instructor if you are looking for a good full body working.

Our second time we did the “gravity” course, it was with Victoria. Victoria is a friendly instructor that pointed out how we could improve our form and make sure we did it right. We did a lot of leg exercises and really focused on keeping your abs flexed at all times and you butt tight. When I asked the front desk, they said Victoria appeals to more Pilates style workout.Gravity Class at Lava Sport and Fitness UTC Location

Both times it was a good workout and both instructors were equally as accommodating and really pushed you so that you got a good workout. You can go at your own pace and it is really up to you on how hard you want your workout to be.

Things to Keep in Mind:

  • Start on Level 7. ( Yea..there are no numbers on the machine. But there are 10 settings, so move the bar 3 steps down. )
  • When you need to move to a different level on the machine, lift the connecting bar and pull back on the back of the machine. It’s confusing at first… but just look at how other people do it or ask the instructor.
  • You going to want to sit at the bottom of the board so that you can grab the corners.
  • Keep your butt and abs tight…i mean TIGHT! Come on! FLEX THOSE MUSCLES!!
  • When you do the jumping, but sure to land on your toes then roll on to your heels. You don’t want to land with a big thump… you’ll end up moving your machine and people will think you are out to play bumper cars.
  • Bring water.
  • Did I mention to keep your butt and abs tight?
  • Have fun and push yourself! You’ll be addicted and come back for more :)

Overall both Kellyne and I are enjoying the Lava Sport and Fitness Club Featuring The Boxing Club. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a fun environment and alternative workout style. If you are not big on lifting weights or running on treadmills, this is a great way to get into shape and its FUN!

On a side note:

To the Lava Sport and Fitness Featuring The Boxing Club:

I would love to work with your company in redesigning your website . Currently, a lot of pages on your website don’t work and I constantly find myself running in circles because the navigation is misleading. You could also benefit from better SEO practices. I would love the opportunity to work with such a great company and re-design this website so it is more user friendly. Nothing is worse than clicking a link to a photo gallery, only to have it lead to a broken link /or return you to the exact same page or clicking a link that is linked to your local Macintosh computer ( Yikes! ). A lot of individuals now a days do research via the web, I believe you could increase membership to your gym by improving your website. I happened to notice a lot of my blog views have come from people searching “Lava Sport and Fitness” or “The Boxing Club”.

If you happen to stumble on this blog post, feel free to contact me and let me know what you think! Love the gym by the way :).

What do you guys think of the Lava Sport and Fitness website?

If you have been to Lava Sport and Fitness Featuring the Boxing Club, I’d love to hear your review, tips, or suggestions!

Boxing at “The Boxing Club” on Convoy St

Kellyne and I went to “The Boxing Club” on Convoy St. in San Diego. Lets just put it this way, boxing is a sport best served with a side of your gonna be dead tired. They even have you sign a death waiver.

We got a month membership off thedailysave.com website for the low low price of $18 (read that in the common infomercial voice to get the full effect).

Tonight we will finish by watching the movie “Julia and Julie” or whatever. I hope that inspires me to blog more…is anyone even listening?
