Following Your Dreams
On 06, Dec 2011 | 4 Comments | In Bucket Listing, Everyday Words | By Ryan Lum
The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. - Eleanor Roosevelt
I love this quote because I consider myself a dreamer. I remember when I was a child, I’d daydream during class about all the amazing things happening around me and pictured myself taking part of all the excitement.
The future is now. That is the one fault in this quote. The biggest challenge I’ve learned while starting up the San Diego Bucket List Group, Forward Motion, is that you have to make it easy for people to take part of it otherwise people will wait till the last minute. A lot of individuals need that extra motivation to make that jump. I have and still struggle with this mentality. The time is now. Don’t wait. Read more…
Day 9 – Recovering
On 01, Aug 2011 | No Comments | In Traveling | By Ryan Lum
Pretty much my day started by waking up at 7pm. Wait, what?
Yea. I slept from 2am to 7pm. I slept for 17 hours.
So obviously this took ruined my plans of getting any sort of work and recovery done. This whole week I’ll spend catching up on work and getting all those errands done such as getting a new driver’s license, credit cards, insurance and etc.
Well, not much to say about today as I spent most of it asleep. All I have to say is.
Thank you for joining me on this CRAZY adventure. Also special thanks goes out to all of those who supported me during the time of crisis. It really meant a lot to me to hear from all of you and the support! Of course many thanks to both my friends Tim King and Jason Kirby for a very memorable trip. Until next time…
Gracias y adiós a mis amigos!
Vielen Dank und auf Wiedersehen meine Freunde!
Dank u en tot ziens mijn vrienden!
Why I’m A Gemini
On 05, Jul 2011 | 2 Comments | In Everyday Words | By Ryan Lum
Since Geminis are a mix of the yin and the yang, they are represented perfectly by the Twins. The Gemini-born can easily see both sides of an issue, a wonderfully practical quality.
I don’t believe in the whole compatibility signs (to an extent) as I don’t like to think everything is so determined and set in stone; however, I do believe there are many aspects of my sign that are very true:
My 10 Essentials
On 13, Feb 2011 | No Comments | In Everyday Words | By Ryan Lum
Let me first start out that I don’t consider myself materialistic. Should I ever go traveling one day and live abroad, I’d hate to feel attached to an object. On the other hand, I’d like to share with you 10 things I do really enjoy:
Ad2Sd Student Agency Tour

“Often the difference between a successful person and a failure is not one has better abilities or ideas, but the courage that one has to bet on one’s ideas, to take a calculated risk – and to act.” – Andre Malraux
Tomorrow I will be going on the Ad2SD Student Agency Tour.
I’m very excited as it will be my first time attending an Ad2SD event. The tour will commence at 9:45am and we will see 4 different San Diego Agencies. I don’t believe I’ve ever been in an Advertising Agency before, so I’m excited to see what the workplace will look like. Of course I will have resume in hand. I’m a little disappointed as in preparing my resume for the agencies, I thought of some new ideas on how to market myself. I think that is one of the hardest parts about being a designer, never feeling accomplishment.
In design, there are always improvements to be made. Why? Well we are creating works of art in a world of change. Design and art must adapt to be effective & unique.
EDIT: I just got back from the Agency Tour. To sum up the tour in 3 words, money well spent. I learned a lot about how agencies work internally and the knowledge I gained today is invaluable. Here are some of the tips and tricks I learned today:
One foot in front of the other
On 12, Apr 2010 | One Comment | In Career Development, Everyday Words | By Ryan Lum
Well it is April 12th…but of course you knew that! I haven’t blogged in a couple days so I thought I’d come on the ‘ole world wide web and share what I have been up to.
- I recently refined my resume to include my newest award (The Monthly American Design Award).
- I just got two books in the mail (On a side note..doesn’t it feel good to get packages in the mail? It’s like Christmas in April! Yippe!). I just picked up “CSS: The Missing Manual” by David McFarland and “DOM Scripting: Web Design with JavaScript and the Document Object Model” by Jeremy Keith. I just starting looking through the books and this is what I concluded. Know Document Object Models ( or DOM ). It is VERY useful in web design, especially with the newest W3C standards, it is very viable in web development. It allows you to manipulate and create more dynamic pages on the fly. I have not started the CSS book, but in brushing through it, it seems like a good starter book and something to to refresh and keep the mind sharp.
- I believe I have a couple interviews lined up in the coming weeks. An individual I used to intern with plans on setting me up with a couple interviews with a couple Ad Agencies in San Diego.
That is it for now! I’m currently working on two websites which I’m VERY excited about. Both are coming along nicely and are clean designs and of course valid code. I would like to get these websites done as soon as possible because these websites represent my work a lot better than my current designs.
That is it for now! I’m tired as I just got back from a Gravity class from the boxing club. Review of the Lava Sport and Fitness Clubs coming soon. Hey, I got to switch it up sometimes! :)
Take care everyone and thank you if you stumbled across my blog.
How To Get A Job In Advertising
On 07, Apr 2010 | No Comments | In Career Development | By Ryan Lum

Day 1 of my journey. If you are just joining me, the plan is to get a job in advertising in about a month and a half.
As you may notice I’m up at 7am. I couldn’t get much sleep nor did I want to. I have a large task ahead of me, and I don’t want these opportunities to pass by.
On the agenda today? I have to go meet at the San Diego State University EMC to discuss a website project that I am currently working on. I’m currently working on 3 big website projects (which I NEED) and I can’t wait to place them in my portfolio. I’m going to try to design on in HTML5 (the latest web technology).
Then I go to work for about 5-6 hours to work on various web/graphic projects. It keeps me busy, but unfortunately, it ties me up so I can’t focus on my business/job hunt.
Below is my resource list for getting ideas and learning on how I can get a job in advertising before it is too late. It will be updated along the way.
My plans for tonight: Brush through my website www.RyanLum.com to refine the code, research how to traverse the DOM ( seems like every web developer needs to know this), refine resume and add my most recent award.
Well, it’s time to make some breakfast of ..eggs? ( Well hey, it was JUST Easter)
My Arsenal:
Social Media – I probably am on a majority of the sites, Google Buzz, Delicious, Digg, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
My Seeds – I tried to get my name indexed (used slideshare to get more pages on the webs indexed on different sites).
My website – I took a lot of time designing this site, and will put time in the blog.
My Resume – Cleaned it up so its short and sweet. Before I had a lot of things listed..who wants to see that? job history dating back to 2001? no thanks.
My brain – Lets do it.
My Resource list:
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/ – Great website full of tutorials, articles, and everything design.
http://workawesome.com/ – Great network of sites, useful articles relating work.
http://zenhabits.net/ – to keep me sane.
