Appreciating the little things.

I was so happy that I had the opportunity to attend my first TED conference. It is my dream that someday I will create something that tells such a powerful story as some of the speakers shared today. One of these days I hope to speak at a TED conference and help inspire others to take action.
I want to share another posting on a couple more little things I appreciate in life. The constant reminders that there are those little nuggets in life that is worth taking a look at really helps put life in perspective.

I’ve been continuing Salsa lessons and I’ve been loving it. Today at TEDxAFC they talked a lot about bringing people together through nature, situations and dance. One of the performances was from an underpriveleged school who formed a group called transcenDANCE. Before I jump in, I wanted to quickly share their story because it is an idea that I believe whole-heartedly in:
transcenDANCE Youth Arts Project empowers young people to mobilize social change through Performance Arts based community-building, leadership, and service – and a belief that art is not only a privilege, but a necessity of life. Being a creative person fosters self-awareness, connection to humanity, the ability to explore possibilities, think critically, and transcend self-imposed limits. The members of the performance group are drawn from City Heights – a culturally rich and disadvantaged socioeconomic community of San Diego.
transcenDANCE is an opportunity for a small group of youth, ages 15-19 years, to go through intensive and meaningful training in dance and choreography, writing, and theatre. They use these art forms as vehicles of self-expression about their life experiences and hope for social change.
I totally believe that dance is a universal language. Everyone you meet in these classes are very friendly and kind. It’s a social art. So with that being said, here are 3 more little things I appreciate in life:
#1 Finally nailing that one dance move.
You’ve worked so hard and tried to wrap your head around where your feet go and what to do with your hands…that one time you go through the routine and NAIL IT.. that’s incredibly rewarding.
#2 Being surrounded by like-minded individuals
Nothing is better than knowing you have so much in common and you’re never left standing around asking yourself, “what should I say next?” Being at TEDxAFC today was amazing in that everyone was so mysterious. It was almost like everyone was a Batman who had this secret story behing their lives as to what they want to achieve and the actions they are taking to achieve that goal. Through these events, I can honestly stand by the saying, “Minds move mountains.”
#3 Taking a ride in a vintage elevator
You know, the one with the old man/lady waiting for you on the inside. The person calls you in, closes the door, closes the gate and asks you, “What floor?”
It’s totally a lost art in that the elevator is more of a service than a mode of transportation. It makes the experience less awkward and very human.
